Review our portfolio and determine if Anna MacIsaac Photographer is the Photographer for you!
Reach out to us to start the booking process.
Decide if you would like a Cake Smash or Favorite Food Smash and complete your Smash Portraits Questionnaire.
Decide what you want to use the images for. People usually choose to either book the session as close to baby's birthday to capture at genuine age or closer to 11 months so that you will have the images returned in time for party invites, thank yous or favors!
Book your Session and pay the Retainer Fee to secure the date!
Share any ideas you have for your session with me. I will have a lot of what we need and will let you know if there are any purchases I need you to make!
Ten-Eleven Months Old
Make final payment.
Decide on colors or theme for the session.
If you are choosing a Cake Smash, place your cake order. be sure to advise your vendor of any allergies.
Pick out an outfit for "clean" photos. I can supply a Smashing outfit based on what is provided in your Questionnaire and what we have discussed.
Morning of Session
Rearrange large furniture that may be in the way of our shooting space. Keep your house a mess, I know what it looks like to a Toddler home so I'll know if you cheated!
Choose a room that has a hard surface floor. Carpeting will make the backdrop wrinkle and is not an ideal situation.
The room does not need a lot of natural light. I actually prefer less light and will use my equipment to compensate. However, if you have a lot of light, I can work with this as well. I can also help us determine the best room when I show up!
If you picked up your cake early, take the cake out of the fridge and let it defrost for at least 3 hours before the session.
If you are doing spaghetti for the Favorite Food Smash, cook it at least 30 minutes prior to the session so it has time to cool down, but is still fresh! Don't add any sauce or toppings until I arrive so I can help prepare it to be photo perfect!
Have some paper towels or baby wipes on stand by. Things will get messy!
Feed you child breakfast and a morning snack at least one hour before.
If your child normally takes a morning nap, please let them do so. Happy toddlers are the best!
Prepare a few toys to hold over my head to get your child's attention. It can also help to have some of your child's favorite music playing.
Have your child's outfit ready to go!
Prepare for my arrival. This means you should probably put some pants on now.
Dress your child while I am setting up. This typically takes about 10 minutes.
We will do the "clean" photos first so you can dress them in a outfit of your choice!
I will set up for the Smashing while you change baby into the next outfit. We will first take some photos of baby and the set up before we give them the Smashing food.
Then the fun begins! We will center the cake and let baby go at it!
Prepare for a mess!
Prepare for NO mess! Some babies just don't like cake, or they get camera shy! We can try hiding Puff's, Cherrios, fruit or snacks in the back of the cake. We can also give them a spoon if that's how they prefer to eat. If all else fails, Dad's typically enjoy smudging some cake on their face then the tears begin.
After the Smash you can give baby a bath while I clean up. I may ask to leave some pieces of trash with you to throw out.
I will have a Model Release Document for you to sign to either agree or deny permission for me to post Sneak Peeks of your session on Facebook & Instagram.
Tips to Know
Due to growing allergy concerns, Anna MacIsaac Photography will not provide any edible items for the session. You are at your own risk purchasing the cake & smash food for the session.
One year old's typically don't last being happy during the session for longer than 30-45 minutes. Don't be alarmed if you child starts to cry and fuss! We will still try to push through the session.
If you would like to help make your child smile and laugh, please stand directly behind me and not off to the side.
Having siblings and pets our of the home during the session can ease distractions.
Happy babies love to do as they want and we will let them run the show! To an extent.
Often they do not like the cake, or are afraid of it. We will still be sure to capture many great images for you to cherish!
Having your child try cake for the first time before the session can be helpful for them to know what to expect. Even let them eat it with their hands!

When Ordering a Cake
Yellow or White Cake vs. Chocolate (Doesn't look like chocolate on baby's face!)
Buttercream vs. Fondant (Fondant is hard to smash & can cause choking)
No small pearl beads or M&M's (At your own risk-choking hazards)
Ideally 6" or 8" round cake or Giant Cupcake
Advise your vendor of allergies or sensitivities
Keep designs simple
DO NOT buy a pre-made cake from the grocery store. You are investing in beautiful images and paying attention to details will really help bring out the best in your photos!
